The end of the hot summer months signals a return to school, a return to learning. But for students and teachers who participated in Workforce Solutions Golden Crescent's summer programs, the learning never stopped.

Workforce Solutions Golden Crescent provides an array of programs for employers, job seekers and everyone in between with one goal in mind: to connect people to employment opportunities throughout the region. The program's services - including job fairs, training and career counseling - are visible throughout the year.

However, this past summer, Workforce Solutions Golden Crescent has offered two programs that particularly highlight the importance of work experience and career exploration for those who'll soon be headed back to school.

The Summer Earn and Learn program helps students with disabilities gain paid work experience through internships with participating employers. Workforce Solutions Golden Crescent reports success with the program so far, with many participating employers expressing interest in hiring interns on a permanent basis. With this kind of opportunity, Workforce Solutions Golden Crescent gives an underemployed population a chance to get in the door and create connections that might not otherwise have been possible. The Victoria Advocate is currently working with an incoming Victoria College student through this program, and we're excited to participate in this initiative to build up our community.

The Summer Externship Program, offered in partnership with local schools, helps students in a different way: by providing teachers with the knowledge and experience to teach high school students about various career paths. During the summer, the Victoria Advocate hosted two VISD teachers, Amando Cantu and Debra Pena, to help them learn more about the working world of journalism. These teachers and others who participated in the program will be able to pass on knowledge that will help their students think about their futures.

The summer programs are just a sampling of the ways in which Workforce Solutions Golden Crescent improves employment in our region. We look forward to the good work Workforce Solutions Golden Crescent does throughout the year and the hopeful continuation of its summer programs next year.
