Frank Klein's love for nature and animals shines through in his photographs.

"I love the incredible beauty of nature. To me, it is worshipping God," Klein said about his love for photographing nature.

That love has shone through again as the Yorktown farmer-rancher won best of show in the Victoria Photography Club's 13th annual photo contest.

The photo, titled "Strawberry Cactus No. 1" was entered in the flower category. He entered other cactus flower photos in the show as well.

The winning photo was shot on his ranch in West Texas in Val Verde County west of Comstock.

Klein, 62, used a 200-mm Nikon micro lens to capture the bright colors of the cactus bloom. He said he lucked out because the day was overcast, which gave him the best lighting without shadows.

Klein is no stranger to area photo contests and usually has photos that place in the contests.

He credits his love of photography and nature for being able to shoot quality photos.

The contest received 413 entries, including 17 student entries.

The photos will be on display in the center court area at the Victoria Mall through Aug. 19.

"The quality of the entries was outstanding," said Fain Zimmerman, contest co-chairman.

Klein received $125 and a rosette for having the best of show photo. He also receives a 16-by-20-inch stretched canvas print from Korczynski's Photography.

Other prizes include $75 for first place; $50, second place; and $25, third place. Student prizes were $30 for first; $20, second; and $10, third. All winners also received rosettes.

Two additional Korczynski prizes are offered based on selection by the judges - a 16-by-20-inch watercolor print and a 16-by-20-inch mounted print.

Three experienced photographers served as judges: Pamela Fulcher, of Rockport; Tom Savage, of Saginaw; and Richard Korczynski, of Victoria.
