The Victoria Area Homeless Coalition plans to open an emergency warming shelter this week because of the cold weather.

President Lisa Griffin said the overnight warming shelter will be open at Central Church of Christ, 801 E. Airline Road.

The overnight shelter will be open from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. on both Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 6 and 7.

Volunteers to staff the shelter and donations of food and beverages are needed.

Griffin said the coalition opens a shelter when weather conditions reach near freezing or 32 degrees for two or more consecutive days.

She said the coalition and its member agencies are committed to safeguarding vulnerable homeless families and individuals when weather conditions pose a health threat to those living without adequate shelter and heat.

"We will offer food, shelter and companionship to any who are in need," she said.
