St. Joseph senior point guard Alisa Novosad wants the ball in her hands in the fourth quarter.
With the Lady Flyers trailing at the end of the third quarter, Novosad proved she was as comfortable as ever by scoring 10 fourth-quarter points to help the Lady Flyers edge Shiner 52-46 in a non-district game Tuesday night at the Flyer Dome.
"We played a little more aggressive as the game went on," said Novosad, who scored 28 points. "We continued to have confidence throughout the game, and we pushed the ball up the floor and looked for the open man to get easy layups."
The Lady Flyers (8-4) came out strong in the first quarter, outscoring the Lady Comanches 14-7.
But the Lady Comanches worked their way back into the game in the second quarter behind Alex Overton, who scored 8 points in the quarter.
The Lady Comanches outscored the Lady Flyers 18-8 in the second quarter to take a 25-24 halftime lead.
"We've been winning the first half," said Shiner head coach Ray Neal. "We need to put it all together and have a full game. But I think we will be OK going forward."
In the third quarter, there were four lead changes as both teams battled back and forth.
The Lady Comanches recaptured the lead 36-32 going into the fourth quarter behind Rashel Bonds (12 points) and Overton, who led the Lady Comanches with 14 points.
Kailey Williams connected on three 3-pointers to finish with nine points.
However, the Lady Flyers and Novosad weren't going down without a fight.
"They stayed in it, and they met the pressure." said St. Joseph coach Edward Ousley. "There were several points where they could've just rolled over and gave it up, but they fought all the way through."
Novosad and Maegan Marshall took control of the game in the fourth quarter.
Novosad closed the gap to one point with and one on a lay up before coming up with a key jump shot to give the Lady Flyers a 37-36 lead.
The Lady Comanches stayed within two points of the Lady Flyers until a three pointer by Marshall, which opened the Lady Flyers' lead to three points.
The rest of the Lady Flyers' scoring came from free throws.
"We all worked together really well, and pushing the ball is what ultimately helped us win," said post player Maiya Tillman, who had 6 points for the Lady Flyers. "This gives us confidence going forward to know that we can push through."
