Editor, the Advocate:

My American Legion Auxiliary Unit 166 held a silent auction Dec. 9 with the purpose of providing for a veteran family that is in need of a merry Christmas. The response of Victoria businesses to my inquiry of a donation was met with an outpouring of support.

This is a huge thank-you, more than we can say, for stepping up to say "thank you, veterans, for your service to our country and your fellow countrymen."

We would like to thank the following businesses that gave to honor veterans: H-E-B, Halepaska's, Cookie Bouquet, Pastor Glen Dry, Sam's, Walmart (Navarro), Texas Roadhouse, Chili's, Victoria Detail, Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Golden Corral, Victoria All Sports, Lack's Furniture, Colonial Funeral Home, Rosewood Funeral Home, Expressions Floral, Sunshine Florist, Tom and Pam Barnes, Alison Wartsbaugh's LipSense, Atzenhoffer's Outfitters, Barry McHenry at Courtesy Car Wash, Bush's Chicken, Sonic, Hartman Distributing, Holiday Hills, Green Brothers Jewelers, Harbor Freight Tools and Channel 25 Television Group.

It was my honor to visit these fine businesses.

What is a veteran? I believe it is anyone who is willing to step up in faith for God and country.

Sherry Vick, silent auction chairwoman, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 166, Meyersville
