With the Christmas and New Year's Eve league bowling schedule this year, only the Sugar & Spice and Sundowner leagues are competing for two weeks. In week one, each league provided headlines, with Mike Stacy earning the high series for the week honors during Sundowner competition and Pablo Delgado rolling a perfect game during Sugar & Spice action.

Stacy posted individual games of 245, 236 and 209 for a 690 total.

After a slow start with a 179 game, Delgado found his zone and reeled off 12 strikes in his second game to achieve his second 300 game in local league action. He rolled his first 300 game on Jan. 27, 2016.

Former Victoria resident Dave Matthews returned to Victoria for the holidays and bowled great while subbing in two leagues. During Sugar & Spice play, he started the first game with three splits and a 190 game. He found his groove and followed with individual games of 248 and 245 to lead the league with a 683 set. The following night he rolled a 257 high game and 635 total in the Thursday Sundowner League. Other bowlers breaking the 250-650 mark were Delgado (300-669), Justin Tweedle (660), Dandy Richards (655), Cody Hammack (256) and Bob Korczynski (255). Lisa Williams was high for the women while competing in the Sundowner League. She rolled a 211 high individual game, which contributed towards a 558 set. Judy Reyna posted the second high total with a 223 high game helping towards a 552 total. Olivia Jackson posted a nice 225 game.

VUSBC schedules tournament

The VUSBC has scheduled a Mixed Doubles tournament for noon on Feb. 17. The entry fee is $50 per team. The friendly competition can be a good warm-up for the upcoming city tournaments.

Bowler remembered

I regret noting that another former Victoria bowler has passed away. Ellen F. Wendel, of Flatonia, passed this past October at the age of 93. Ellen was a longtime avid bowler and competed in three leagues during the 1991-92 season. Her last year of local league play was in the Woodlawn Seniors League during the 1993-94 season. Our condolences and sympathy go out to the family.

Telecast

The final two animal oil pattern championships were telecast Sunday during the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling IX tournament schedule. The Cheetah Championship featured an all International field finals with Thomas Larsen (Denmark), Jesper Svensson (Sweden), Jason Belmonte (Australia) and Sam Cooley (Australia) going head to head with the top two scores reaching the finals. The 22 year old left-handed and rookie of the year Svensson featured the top game with a 259 and Larsen rolled a 256 to reach the finals. The championship match was a run away with Svensson winning his 7th PBA title with a 245-194 victory.

In the Scorpin Championship the four finalists were Belmonte, E.J. Tackett, Shawn Maldonado (Houston), and Brandon Novak. Belmonte with a 269 game and Tackett with a 258 reached the finals.

In the championship game Belmonte's game fell off while the 25 year old Tackett applied constant pressure to win 245-207.

The PBA World Championship will be broadcast today at noon on ESPN from the Reno Bowling Stadium. The four finalists are Belmonte, Tackett, Ryan Ciminelli and Kyle Troup.
