Jordan Fillmore and the Victoria West Warriors were looking to end the Mike Smith Victoria Classic with a win against Kingwood Park on Saturday morning.
West came up short and lost a 49-37 decision to the Panthers at the District Event Center and the Warriors finished with 1-4 record in the Classic.
Fillmore believes the Warriors made strides despite the losses.
"I feel like we're starting to get to learn how to play with each other," Fillmore said. "We just have to come out more focused in the beginning and play the whole game."
West (6-15) led early in the first quarter after senior point guard Keon Boyd drove to the basket for a layup to put the Warriors up 4-3, but the Panthers finished on a 11-2 run to take 14-6 lead into the second quarter.
Boyd finished `with 11 points, including a 3-pointer.
The Warriors would never take another lead in the game as the Panthers took a 20-13 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
"I think you can learn from these disappointing games," said West assistant head coach Hector Reyes. "I think the main thing to take away from the tournament is to learn from your mistakes. We have to try to eliminate them as much as possible and make sure that we come out ready to play."
Fillmore scored his team-high 12 points in the second half, including two 3-pointers.
Fillmore hit a 3-pointer and a layup as West cut Kingwood Park's lead to six, 34-28, to start the fourth quarter, but the Panthers countered with an 8-0 run to seal the victory.
West returns District 27-5A play at 7:30 p.m. Friday as the Warriors host Angleton.
"We played some really great teams in this tournament," Fillmore said. "We should be ready for anything that comes to us next in district."
