UHV begins defense of its Red River Athletic Conference regular season title Friday and Saturday when the Jaguars take on the Huston-Tillotson Lady Rams in a four-game series in Austin.
Coming off their best finish ever at the Cowtown Classic where the 18th-ranked Jaguars went 4-1, UHV opens RRAC play against the Lady Rams (2-1) with a pair of 2 p.m. doubleheaders.
The Jaguars won the RRAC regular season title last year with a 25-3 record and advanced to the NAIA Opening Round tournament in Oklahoma City where they lost in the title game.
The early success was also special for UHV head coach Lindsey Ortiz who collected her 100th-career victory at the tournament when the Jaguars defeated 20th-ranked Central Methodist 1-0 in their second game of the tournament. Ortiz has compiled a 102-48 record in four years.
The Jaguars own a 20-1 overall series record against the Rams since 2010. The Jaguars have won 14 straight over the Lady Rams since suffering their lone loss, a 4-3 decision, in the final game of a doubleheader in 2011.
Following the RRAC opener, the Jaguars will return home for their home debut with a 2 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday against Schreiner at the Victoria Youth Sports Complex.
