The man who was airlifted after suffering injuries in a one-vehicle wreck Sunday afternoon has been identified.

The driver of the 1993 Toyota Paseo was identified as Alton Augusta Stafford, who turns 65 Wednesday, of Cedar Creek, said Trooper Ruben San Miguel of the Department of Public Safety.

The vehicle was traveling south on U.S. 87, went across the center median and was found disabled on the east side of the northbound lanes near Thomaston River Road.

San Miguel said a weapon and illegal substances were found inside the vehicle.

Stafford's condition while driving is still unknown.

As a result, San Miguel said the case is under investigation.

Stafford remained in stable condition Tuesday, San Miguel said.
