Editor, the Advocate:
Billy Diaz has been a friend of mine for nearly 20 years, and Lisa Diaz for about 12 years.
Lisa was in a rather serious accident when their son, Bentley, was just a baby. She was life-flighted to San Antonio and remained there a long time. Billy refused to leave her side. I kept Bentley and Hailey so that he wouldn't have so much on his plate. He lost everything during that battle, including his home.
When Lisa was released, they moved in with me temporarily and then into the house next door, when it became available. During this time I was able to truly see the love Billy has for his family. He is not kidding when he says he will gladly lose everything he has to save them. He has before. And he has built himself back up.
Billy Diaz is well known in this town, as I am sure most of you know. He has walked many different paths, but the one he walks now is that of a loving father and husband. He has a hard time keeping a permanent job while also being the primary care giver for Bentley. Lisa has become the breadwinner in the family, and that's a tough pill for him to swallow. He's a proud person, and he hates asking for help, but he definitely needs our help right now.
Victoria is a community that loves to give and help out, and I am positive that with a little publicity, the city could band together and help the Diaz family out. Even during the early stages of Bentley's diagnosis, Billy was not only caring for and worrying about him but also gathering supplies to help other communities out during their time of need.
I'd love to see the Victoria community come together to help them out. They have a crowdfunding account at gofundme.com/kanumamatata.
