A Citizens Medical Center manager received a Patriot Award for supporting an employee serving in the Navy Reserves.

Randy Kucera, director of the interventional cardiac cath lab, was nominated for the award by employee John Cordes, who is a cardiac cath lab special procedures radiologic technologist.

Espiridion Castillo, of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, presented the award to Kucera at the hospital Wednesday.

The ESGR is a Department of Defense program established in 1972 to promote cooperation and understanding between Reserve Component Service members and their civilian employers.

Cordes, who has served for the past 11 years, said he nominated Kucera because Kucera allows him the chance to serve without question.

Kucera adjusts the call schedule based on his schedule to allow those weekends to be free.

"I sometimes get quick notice to leave, and he supports those orders," Cordes said.

The Navy Reserves member's wife, Loretta Cordes, also works at the hospital.

Cordes said he appreciates that Kucera makes sure to check on his family when he's gone.
