After more than 40 years of service, Halepaska's Bakery will close its Rio Grande store Saturday because the store was not making a big enough profit.

"Customers pay the salaries. Without those salaries you can't pay your employees and without those employees you cannot operate," owner Tom Halepaska said.Halepaska confirmed Wednesday night that Saturday will be the last day of operation for the 302 East Rio Grande store.

Halepaska will transfer all seven employees to the other bakery at 5805 N. John Stockbauer Drive. That store opened in 1991.

"I have good employees. They are the most important part of my company," Halepaska said.

For the past 35 years, the company has made it a tradition to close the bakery the first week of July for staff vacation. On July 10, operation will resume, in only one location.

"We have many wonderful customers that like what we do," Halepaska said. "We will still be here, just in one location instead of two."

Halepaska owns the building, but he does not know what he will do with it.
