The Victoria County Sheriff's Office has few details after finding a deceased person Monday morning on a deserted stretch of Old Bloomington Road.

Chief Deputy Roy Boyd confirmed John Hartley, 45, of Bloomington, was discovered about 5:30 a.m. between McCoy Road and Black Bayou Road No. 1 about two miles northwest of Bloomington.

Boyd said his office is investigating the death as a homicide.

"Until determined otherwise, we are handling it as a homicide," he said.

Wide, empty fields abut that roadway. A nearby Air Liquide plant, 767 Old Bloomington Road, is one of few man-made structures visible from where the body was found.

Robert Maretick, a retired Bloomington resident, said he saw nothing suspicious along the road recently. He said he has witnessed previously at night what he thought to be illegal drug sales or interactions between vehicles along nearby roadways.
