Food service inspections

The Victoria County Public Health Department Environmental Health Division inspects places where food is served in Victoria, DeWitt, Jackson and Calhoun counties.

In the inspection reports, each violation in the Priority items 1-20 is 3 demerits; Priority Foundation items 21-33 are 2 demerits; and Core items are 1 demerit. Zero is a perfect score, while 100 demerits is the worst possible score.

Each Wednesday, the Advocate publishes inspection results from the previous week. All demerits are reported, but only those Priority and Core items are detailed.

FOOD SERVICE INSPECTIONS FOR WEEK ENDING APRIL 28

Texas Seafood Restaurant, 2202 N. Navarro St., Victoria. Demerits: 37. Keep time and temperature of food sitting out at room temperature. Cover food in walk-in cooler and freezer. Cannot use cardboard to cover food. Cannot stack container of food in another container of food. Need more bleach in third compartment. Set up to wash, rinse and sanitize. Wash hands with soap. Keep soap at hand sinks. Wait staff needs to wear gloves when handling lemons. Label chemical buckets. Store medicine with personal items. Repair leaking water heater. Need a certified food manager. Post the certificate. Need food handlers. Keep their cards on file at establishment. Restroom hot water took too long to get hot in women's restroom. Need hot water in men's restroom. Keep soap and paper towels at hand sinks. Clean the batter container by table top. Wiping cloths need to be stored in sanitizer bucket. Keep boxes at least 4 to 6 inches off floor. Store ice scoop on clean, sanitized surface. Replace the ice scoop. Batter tray outside needs cleaning. Need light shields in kitchen area. Clean ceiling air vents and replace dirty tiles. Keep back door closed or put in a screen door. Need more lighting in freezer. Keep personal food separate. Cannot have children in food preparation areas.

Taqueria "La Frontera," 811 E. Rio Grande St., Victoria. Demerits: 35. Do not store containers over uncovered food. Store raw meat below lettuce. Cover all food in coolers. Wash hands in between tasks. Use gloves when handling ready-to-eat foods. Need a certified food manager certificate. Need a disclosure and reminder on menu. Need chlorine test strips. Do not use cardboard to cover shelves. Set up three-compartment sink to wash, rinse and sanitize. Store personal items away from customers' items. Do not store personal medication in container with Sweet'n Low packets. Employee drinks need lids and straws. Store sanitizer rags in sanitizer bucket. Do not store food directly in thank-you bags. Defrost meat under cold, running water. Store plastic ware in same direction. Label bulk containers of flour, sugar, etc. Clean inside table top. Lights need light shields over lights in waitress area. Garbage and grease receptacle need to be on cement pad. Back door needs to completely shut. Clean the vent hood. Women's restroom trash can needs a lid. Will return for re-inspection.

Cameron Inn, 1906 Houston Highway, Victoria. Demerits: 30. Improper cold-hold temperature. Store personal foods away from customers. Repair leak under two-compartment sink. Need a certified food manager. Employees need food handlers certificates. Need cold water at hand sink. Post dish-washing procedure. Need chlorine test strips. Keep soap and paper towels in restroom. Cabinet shelves need shelf paper. Need a three-compartment sink. Address problem with presence of roaches and ants. Remove dead roaches and ants. Label waffle mix. Repair wall behind two-compartment sink. Women's restroom needs a covered trash can. Most recent inspection needs to be posted. May not serve food until refrigeration and cold water are repaired. Suspended permit.

Cracker Barrel No. 4, 6007 N. Main St., Victoria. Demerits: 17. Improper cold-hold temperature. Discard food in walk-in cooler that has been in there more than four hours. Clean the ice machine. Employees need food handlers certificates. Need chlorine test strips. Clean rust on the three-compartment sink. Sanitizer rags need to be stored in sanitizer bucket. Wooden shelves need to be easily cleanable. Replace missing ceiling tiles.

Super Stop, 2006 N. Ben Wilson St., Victoria. Demerits: 16. Dispose of expired canned goods and dented cans. Need a first-aid kit. Need a certified food manager. Clean the ice machine. Wiping cloths need to be in sanitizer bucket. Paper products need to be stored at least 6 inches off the floor. Walls need cleaning. Seal hole in wall. Replace missing base boards. Trash cans need lids in restroom. Need hand-washing sign in restroom.

Aunt Jo's BBQ, mobile unit, Victoria. Demerits: 15. Need to wash hands before glove use. Need a first-aid kit. Need a certified food manager. Need food handlers certificates. Thermal test strips needed. Need to post a permit. Post last inspection. Water sample is due.

Crazy About Mangonadas 2, mobile unit, Victoria. Demerits: 14. Need sanitizer. Need certified food manager certificate. Need food handlers certificates. Need test strips. Keep hand sink free. Employees need to wear hair restraints. Refrigerator needs cleaning. Post the certified food manager certificate. Need water sample. Last one was Feb. 2, 2016.

Snax Mart, 2004 N. Esplanade St., Cuero. Demerits: 12. Need food handlers card for employees handling pizza. Table top and walk-in need thermometer. Expired permit posted. Hand sink may not be blocked by crates, and tile should not be laying in sink with sponges. Ice machine needs cleaning, especially on the right side. Tiles need to be tightened on the floor - glued tight to the surface. Tiles need to be easily cleanable. Restroom needs hand-washing sign. New owner took over in December.

El Norteno Mexican Food, 4105 Port Lavaca Drive, Victoria. Demerits: 11. Repair leak under the mop sink outside. Date-label all foods. Address problem with presence of roaches. One was found crawling on wall. Continue to close off all holes in wall.

Jason's Deli, 5301 N. Navarro St., Victoria. Demerits: 11. Need a certified food manager certificate. Keep paper towels at hand sink. Address problem with presence of roaches and rodent droppings. Remove dead roaches and clean up the rodent droppings. Employee drinks need lids and straws. Store sanitizer buckets below preparation table and not on the floor. Store employee drinks away from customers' food. Defrost frozen packages under cold, running water or in walk-in cooler. Label big containers of sugar, flour, etc. Need a covered trash can in women's restroom.

Stop N Save, 707 S. Navarro St., Victoria. Demerits: 11. Dispose of outdated burritos. Post the policy for dish washing. Need chlorine test strips. Paint wooden shelves. Capri Suns cannot be sold individually. Repair hand-washing sink in back room.

M.H. Leske Oil Co., 413 S. Esplanade St., Cuero. Demerits: 10. Need a certified food manager. All employees must be food-handler certified. Need a working thermometer in small sandwich cooler. Need bleach test strips. Clean the ice machine. Install a three-compartment sink.

Amour, Inc., 114 Sam Houston Drive, Victoria. Demerits: 10. Store raw ground meat under cooked sausage and bacon. Wash hands before entering kitchen or serving food and applying your gloves. Employee drinks must have lids and straws. No water bottles. Cover hole in storage area above food trays.

L&L Grill, 5306 Houston Highway, Victoria. Demerits: 10. Need a certified food manager certificate. Repair hot water at women's restroom. Need chlorine test strips. Mop sink needs hot water. Need covered trash can in restroom. Need hand-washing sign at all hand sinks.

Maximus, 1901 N. Ben Wilson St., Victoria. Demerits: 10. Need a certified food manager permit. Need food handlers permits. Clean the ice machine. Label the mop sink. Women's restroom needs lid on trash can. Post last inspection, permit and certified food manager certificate.

Brown Bag Saloon, 8609 N. Navarro St., Victoria. Demerits: 9. Wash hands between glove use. Bottom part of table top not holding at 41 degrees. Call when repaired. Ice machine needs a good cleaning. Items must be thawed out in cooler or under cold, running water. Nonfood contact surface (shelves) need to be easily cleanable. May not use cardboard. Recommend covering shelves with shelving paper.

Fastop Food Store No. 4, 3508 N. Navarro St., Victoria. Demerits: 9. Date-label burritos with seven-day use-by date. Need test strips. Hand-washing sink needs to be accessible. Clean the pickle caddy.

Fastop Food Store No. 1, 1901 John Stockbauer Drive, Victoria. Demerits: 7. Keep time on hot dogs or turn up temperature. Post certified food manager certificate. Install mop sink.

Pizza Hut No. 022652, 3404 N. Navarro St., Victoria. Demerits: 7. All employees need food handlers certificates. Post permit visible to public. Clean the ice machine. Post last inspection and certified food manager certificate.

Dollar General No. 3562, 1402 E. Mockingbird Lane, Victoria. Demerits: 6. Dispose of dented cans. Post permit visible to public. Post last inspection visible to public.

Dollar General No. 7474, 701 S. Moody St., Victoria. Demerits: 6. Dispose of outdated chocolate milk, medication and dented cans. Keep soap and paper towels in restroom. Trash cans need lids.

Homewood Suites by Hilton, 6705 N.E. Zac Lentz Parkway, Victoria. Demerits: 6. Need a certified food manager. Gave information on classes at health department. Keep soap and paper towels at hand-washing sinks. Ice machine needs to be cleaned. Repair missing plate on keg area table top.

La Original Tortilla Company, 302 Profit Drive, Victoria. Demerits: 6. Need a certified food manager. Employees need food handlers certificates. Need chlorine test strips.

Skillet's Restaurant No. 90, 3202 Houston Highway, Victoria. Demerits: 6. Left waitress cooler is not holding at 41 degrees or less. Unit is frozen up. Do not use cardboard to cover shelves. Weatherstrip back door. Work on condensation falling from ceiling in waitress area.

Mayo's Tacos, 404 Dunn St., Yoakum. Demerits: 6. Need a certified food manager. Will be taking class in Austin on April 26. Need certified food handlers. Will be taking class in Austin on April 26. Install mop sink with hot and cold water.

Jenny Moe's, 102 West Bay St., Seadrift. Demerits: 5. White Frigidaire not holding at 41 degrees or below. Store ice scoop on clean, sanitized surface. Food handlers must wear hair restraints. New menu with disclaimer is on order. They will be getting a bodily fluid kit soon. Getting rid of white refrigerator and will be replacing it this week.

Chick-fil-A, 7800 Hallettsville Highway, Suite 155, Victoria. Demerits: 5. Employees need food handlers certificates. Repair soap dispenser. Certified food manager needs to be posted and most recent inspection needs to be posted.

Children's Discovery Museum, 1205 Sam Houston Drive, Victoria. Demerits: 5. Improper cold-hold temperature. Demo refrigerator needs a thermometer. Will return to check refrigerator.

Arnim Tropical Sno, mobile unit, Port Lavaca. Demerits: 4. Need a certified food manager. All other employees need a food handler certificate.

Burger King No. 11204, 8501 N. Navarro St., Victoria. Demerits: 4. Need a current food permit. Ice machine needs cleaning.

Sam's Club No. 6471, 9202 N. Navarro St., Victoria. Demerits: 4. Post certified food manager certificate. Food handler certificates need to be available. Make sure employees wash hands upon entering the kitchen and before glove use.

Barkett's Restaurant, 321 Broadway St., Seadrift; Halepaska's Bakery & Sandwich Shop, 302 E. Rio Grande St., Victoria; Raven's at the Woodlawn, 1326 E. Mrs. Odie's Kitchen, mobile unit at 102 W. Broadway St., Seadrift; Pizza Hut No. 23459, 7002 N.E. Zac Lentz Parkway, Victoria. Demerits: 2.

RE-INSPECTIONS

Chuck E. Cheese's No. 581, 7800 N. Navarro St., Suite 201, Victoria, inspected April 5 with 10 demerits. Re-inspected April 25 with most violations corrected.

Cimarron Express, 1402 John Stockbauer Drive, Victoria, inspected Feb. 9 with 12 demerits. Re-inspected April 24 with violations corrected.

Speedy Stop No. 115, 5101 Houston Highway, Victoria, inspected April 24 with 3 demerits. Re-inspected April 25 with violation corrected.

Emiliano's Mexican Grill, 401 Lott St., Yoakum, inspected March 21 with 41 demerits. Re-inspected April 20 with most violations corrected. Work on labeling and covering items in walk-in. Will be installing a new door soon.

Healthy Living Cottage, 416 Lott St., Yoakum, inspected Feb. 22 with 3 demerits. Re-inspected April 20 with violation corrected.
