A two-vehicle head-on collision sent two Wharton County residents to the hospital Tuesday.

Derek Sless, 25, of El Campo, was headed south about 4:20 p.m. on SH 71 near Farm-to-Market Road 1300 in a gold Toyota pickup when he drove into the northbound lane, causing a head-on collision with a blue Saturn sedan driven by Socorro Colchado, 67, of Louise, said Sgt. Erik Burse, spokesman for the Department of Public Safety.

Department of Public Safety authorities are still investigating what caused Sless to drive into oncoming traffic, he said.

"Intoxication is possibly a contributing factor," he said. "No citations have been issued yet ... All charges are pending."

Both Sless and Colchado were taken by helicopter to Memorial Herman Hospital in Houston. As of Wednesday afternoon, both had been admitted to the hospital. Sless is in stable condition, and Colchado is in critical condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.
