Must move past stigma of mental illness

Editor, the Advocate:
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. will experience mental illness - that is 43.8 million people in a year. An estimated 18 to 22 veterans die by suicide daily. From my own experience as a judge in Victoria County, I see signs and symptoms of mental illness and crisis in people that regularly come before me.
Recently, I attended a Mental Health First-Aid course taught by professionals from Gulf Bend Center. This class helped me recognize signs of mental health issues and equipped me with an action plan. Gulf Bend Center supports our community, and this training is available for anyone - first responders, probation officers, school staff - front line people who help our veterans and the public.
We must move past the stigma of mental illness. I encourage you to contact the Gulf Bend Center for information on this program.
