Editor, the Advocate:
From 1990 to 2015, I worked for Naval Hospital in Corpus Christi and saw many of our young corpsmen go off to war in Desert Storm, Iraq and Afghanistan. It was wonderful to see the Patriot Guard along with other sailors and civilians greeting them when they got off the plane that brought them home.
After I retired, I started spending time in the Crossroads and discovered a community that has taken honoring our veterans to a whole other level. A friend of mine enrolled me in the Field of Honor this year, and I witnessed Warrior's Weekend.
Today (Nov. 11) was for me a most amazing experience. Thanks to the generosity of Chick-fil-A's David and Tammy Murphy, my friend and I, along with over 200 other veterans, were treated to a wonderful flight around Victoria out of Foster Field. The Murphys were there to welcome and greet us, and Mr. Murphy "coined" me.
In the military, commands have coins struck that are given to members who have earned the respect of the command, and to be "coined" is a significant honor.
I can't tell you how touched and honored I am to have been included in this event.
