55th Annual DeWitt County Pecan Show goes on
Nov. 18, 2017 at 4:21 p.m.
The 55th Annual DeWitt County Pecan Show will be Tuesday, Nov. 21, at the Friar Ag Center in the Cuero City Park, with the judging taking place at 1 p.m.
The pecan show committee is aware most of DeWitt's and surrounding counties' pecan crops were devastated by Hurricane Harvey and the river flooding but decided to continue the pecan show tradition.
Entries from yards of residents as well as from commercial producers are encouraged. Participants are encouraged to enter as many pecan varieties as they can.
As an incentive, the champion of each division (Native, Commercial and Classic) will be awarded a $25 cash prize.
Pecan entries need to be brought to the DeWitt County Extension Office by 5 p.m. Monday or dropped off at the Friar Ag Center by 8 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21.
The Pecan Food Show will be held in conjunction with the Pecan Show. If you are interested in entering food items, call or come by the Extension Office to pick up an entry form. Food entry check-in will be 7:30-9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 20. The food entries will be open for public viewing and will go on sale that afternoon 3-6 p.m., and 8 a.m.-noon Tuesday.
In an effort to promote the "true pecan" baked item, winners of the Pecan Pie Youth and Adult Divisions will each be awarded $25. The age divisions are Youth - 19 years of age and younger as of Nov. 20 and Adult - 20 years of age and older as of Nov. 20.
A children's poster contest with an emphasis on pecans will be held for children ages 6-12 years who live in DeWitt County. First-, second- and third- place winners will be selected and will receive cash prizes. Posters need to be brought to the County Extension office Monday Nov. 20 or by 10 a.m. Tuesday to the Friar Ag Center.
All cash awards for the 55th Annual DeWitt County Pecan Show and Bake Show are sponsored by the Cuero Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture. All grand and reserve champion plaques and rosettes are sponsored by DeWitt M&J - Mark Vavrusa and Cuero Pecan House - Erwin, Annette and Anthony Rath.
