GOLIAD - Savannah Shaw had a flashback Tuesday night when the No. 3 Tigerettes hosted East Bernard for a non-district game.
Shaw, who is one of three seniors on the team, had a memory of last year's state championship game with the third set tied at 26 at the Goliad Events Center.
Shaw had a block and a kill assisted by setter Kelly Thomas to seal Goliad's 25-19, 25-18, 28-26 sweep of East Bernard.
"When I hit the last kill, it felt like it did when we won state last year," said the senior middle blocker, who finished the night with 9 kills, 3 blocks and 10 digs. "We made some mistakes, but we pushed through them and were able to get this win. We always have energy and are excited when we play a stronger team. We like to go against good competition."
The Tigerettes (25-7, 7-0) trailed the Lady Brahmas (13-9, 8-0) 16-7 in the third set, but were able to fight back and tie the set at 20 after Amaya Brown hit a kill assisted by Thomas.
There were five more ties and four lead changes before the Tigerettes won the set.
"It makes me proud because we have been going through a slow district, and I wasn't sure how we would handle faster play," said Goliad head coach Jess Odem. "A win like this just showed the girls that they are able to comeback from being down by so much. We jumped on them early getting the first two sets, which helped us out."
Brown had 9 kills, Kassidy Nicholson added 12 digs, and Ashlyn Davis had 9 kills, 4 aces and 2 blocks for the Tigerettes.
Junior setter Thomas, who had 25 assists, 6 digs, 2 blocks, and an ace, has seen improvement from the Tigerettes since the beginning of the season.
"We have a better setter-to-hitter connection; and we have gotten a lot better as a team," Thomas said. "In the beginning of the year you couldn't say that about us being a young team. We're communicating out there more and really playing together as one. To come back and get a win like this is big especially being down in the third set."
Goliad has five more matches, including three District 29-3A contests.
The Tigerettes have won three district titles under Odem and will be looking for their fourth district championship.
Odem knows that the Tigerettes will have to play a full game to be crowned district champions.
"We have a great start and a great finish, but it's the middle area that we need to work on," Odem said. "We need to make sure our energy is high and being able to finish a game all the way through with a lot of stamina.
