As the UHV women's golf team prepares to open the 2017-18 season, the Jaguars will have a slightly new look and added depth for this year's squad.
The Jaguars open the season Monday and Tuesday in San Antonio at the Alamo City Classic hosted by Trinity University at the Quarry Golf Club.
After competing with just four players for the past two years, first-year head coach Christi Cano will field a team of nine players this year with the addition of six freshmen. Three of those freshmen will be making their first collegiate starts at the Alamo City Classic.
Cano announced Friday that returnees Reid Whaley and Viviana Yzquierdo will be joined by Leah Lerma, Lorrin Dickey and Jocelyn Villafranca at the team's first event.
Jo Ellen Canales also returns, along with freshmen Kelsey Torres, Victoria Garcia and Viviana Puente to round out the Jaguars team.
The Jaguars have made two other appearances at the Alamo City Classic during their seven previous years of competition. UHV bested nine other teams to win the title in 2014 and finished fifth out of eight in 2015.
The Jaguars can expect some stiff competition from the mostly NCAA Division III field that includes Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference schools Schreiner, Southwestern and Texas Lutheran, along with host Trinity.
Yzquierdo, who was UHV's Newcomer of the Year last year, leads the returnees with an 87.00 scoring average in eight events from last season.
Whaley, who was the 2016 Newcomer of the Year, finished with a 93.47 scoring average.
Following the Alamo City Classic, the Jaguars are scheduled to compete in the Tyler Junior College Fall Invitational on Oct. 23-24 to wrap up their fall season.
