"And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him, saying, "Save us, Lord; we are perishing." And he said to them, "Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?" Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm."
- Matthew 8:23-27
My great-grandma had a saying that I always thought was a Bible Scripture. When I was just a little child and when I became afraid, she would hold her hand up into the air to hush me and say: "God is on the water, the same as on the land."
I did not know it was not a Scripture until many years later. But I do know that it is a great saying from my great-grandmother who was blind and who loved me and understood me. She was blind but could see through me and loved me very much.
Last week as I rode out Hurricane Harvey at my home, I recalled my great-grandma's saying very often. I fell back into my childhood faith and repeatedly said, "God is on the water, the same as on the land."
I used the saying to renew my faith when facing Hurricane Harvey. Now, some of my fellow Americans are in the direct path of Hurricane Irma, which is one of the largest named hurricanes to face American soil. The truth still is "God is on the water, the same as on the land."
Dear Lord, please be with those who are facing this huge Hurricane Irma that causes fear wherever it goes. Give them strength and childhood-like faith to face this storm by knowing that "God is on the water, the same as on the land."
