Jaguars claim RRAC opener

HOUSTON - The UHV men's soccer team tallied singles goals in each half Saturday night to down the Houston St. Thomas Celts 2-0 in a Red River Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Saturday at the Houston Sports Complex.
The Jaguars evened their series with the Celts with victory at 4-4-1 and improved to 2-1 on the year and 1-0 in RRAC play. The loss drops the Celts to 1-3-1 and 0-1 in RRAC play.
Espen Hansen gave the Jaguars the big goal in the first half as he converted on his only shot of the game in the 34th minute. Sanad Jalajal would add an insurance goal in the 53rd minute.
The defense took care of the rest as the Jaguars held the Celts to just nine shots, three in the second half, and four shots on goal.
Out shot in the first half 6-5, the Jaguars offense put on the pressure in the second half firing up eight shots, including six on goal.
Reece Hannigan paced the Jaguars with five shots, including three on goal, while Adrian Mendoza, Uriel Garcia and Adrian Rodriguez each got off two shots.
A total of 36 fouls were called in the contest and seven yellow cards, including five against the Celts, were issued.
The Jaguars will return to action on Thursday in Louisiana when they face LSU-Shreveport in a 3:30 p.m. match.
In other RRAC action on Saturday, Huston-Tillotson edged Our Lady of the Lake 2-1 in overtime, while LSUA blanked LSUS 1-0 in overtime and Willey College downed Texas A&M- Texarkana 3-0.
