A Cuero man barricaded himself in a tool shed Monday afternoon and later killed himself.

The Cuero Police Department responded to the 500 block of East French Street in Cuero about 4 p.m. after the man's girlfriend called 911 to have them do a welfare check on his residence, said DeWitt County Justice of the Peace Peggy Mayer.

"He was upset, and he was in a shed behind the house," Mayer said. "Police were trying to find him and check on his well-being ... (They) didn't know what state of mind he was in and where he was. He locked the door from the inside."

Mayer pronounced the man dead and ruled the cause of death as a suicide by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
