Filing underway for May 5 regional elections

Filing is underway for the May 5 city council and school district elections.

Filing for a place on the ballot ends Feb. 16. Deadline to file as a write-in is candidate ends Feb. 20.

Below is a list of the elections planned in the region, the seats that are on the ballot and the names of people who have filed as of Thursday.

Calhoun County

Port Lavaca City Council: Mayor and city council seats 2 and 6 are up for election. Mayor: Jack Whitlow, 63, mayor, incumbent; Seat 2: Tim Dent, 55, business manager, incumbent; Seat 6: Ken Barr, 72, retired school teacher, incumbent. All are of Port Lavaca.

Special election: A proposition to propose the sale of Lorraine Sultan Park.

Calhoun County school board: Districts 4 and 5 are up for election.

District 4: Lina Moore, 51, of Port Lavaca, education administrator, incumbent; District 5: no filings.

Seadrift: Mayor and two at-large city council seats are up for election.

Mayor: Elmer DeForest, 68, of Seadrift, semi-retired, incumbent; At-large council seats: Ranier Brigham, 61, of Seadrift, fishing guide, incumbent; Peggy Gaines, 48, of Seadrift, homemaker, incumbent.

Point Comfort: City council: Mayor and two at-large city council seats are up for election.

Mayor: Leslie Machicek, 43, of Point Comfort, nurse, incumbent; At-large city council seats: no filings.

DeWitt County

Cuero:

City Council: Mayor and council Districts 2 and 3 are up for election.

Mayor: Sara Post Meyer, 71, of Cuero, retired teacher, incumbent; District 2, no one has filed yet; District 3, no one has filed yet

School Board: District 5 and two at-large seats are up for election.

District 5, Bill Hamilton, 65, of Cuero, retired assistant superintendent, incumbent; Two at-large positions, Mary Sheppard, 60, of Cuero, retired school counselor, incumbent; Donnie Garrison, 64, of Cuero, oil field operations manager and former Westhoff school superintendent, incumbent.

DeWitt Medical District - Two directors; no one has filed yet.

Yorktown:

City Council: Three at-large positions are on the ballot

At-large: Roger Cowan, of Yorktown, newspaper reporter.

School Board: No board election

Nordheim:

City Council: Three at-large positions on the ballot.

At-large: Rene Garcia, 74, of Nordheim, retired teacher, incumbent.

School Board: Three at-large positions on the ballot

At-large: Elisha Tam, 38, of Nordheim, nurse, incumbent

Goliad County

Goliad:

City Council: Mayor and two at-large city council positions to be elected.

Mayor, Trudia Preston, of Goliad, incumbent.

School Board: Districts 5 and 7 are up for election.

District 5: Steven Webel, account manager, incumbent; District 7, Trey Wimberly, branch manager for Goliad National Bank, incumbent. Both are of Goliad.

Jackson County

Edna:

City Council: Districts 3,4,5 are up for election.

District 3: No filings; District 4: Lance Smiga, incumbent, of Edna; District 5 Johnny Vasquez, incumbent, of Edna.

Edna School Board: Districts 1, 2 and 4 are up for election.

District 1: Brandon Curlee, incumbent, of Edna; District 2: Terry Miller, incumbent, of Edna; District 4: Brandon Peters, incumbent, of Edna.

Ganado:

City Council: Mayor and two council seats are up for election.

Mayor: no filings; council member: James Sudik, incumbent, of Ganado.

Ganado board of trustees: Districts 5, 6, and 7 are up for election.

District 5: Billy Benavides, 42, senior project manager, of Ganado; District 6: Mary Kay George, 57, of Ganado, incumbent; District 7: Clay Green, 45, of Ganado.

LaWard City Council: Mayor and two alderperson seats are up for election.

Mayor: Richard Koch, incumbent, of La Ward; alderperson: Mary Gutierres, incumbent, of La Ward; Mike Williams, incumbent, LaWard.

Jackson County Hospital District: Precincts 1,2,3, 4 and one at-large position are up for election.

At-large position: Rodney Roberson, incumbent; Precinct 1: Jimmy Lopez, incumbent; Precinct 2: Nils Mauritz, incumbent; Precinct 3: no filings; Precinct 4: David Darilek, incumbent.

Lavaca County

Yoakum:

City Council: Places 4 and 5 are up for election.

Place 4: Elorine Stika, 72, Yoakum, vice president at Yoakum National Bank, incumbent; Place 5: Billy Goodrich, 63, Yoakum, retired.

School Board: Three at-large seats are up for election this year. So far, no one has filed for election.

Hallettsville:

City Council: Places 1,3,4 are up for election.

Place 3: Alice Jo Summers, 67, Hallettsville, case manager, incumbent.

No one has filed yet for Place 1 or Place 4.

School board: Places 1,2,3 are up for election.

Place 2: Billy Gerke, 44, of Lavaca County, business owner, incumbent.

No one has filed for Place 1 or Place 3.

Shiner:

City Council: No one has filed

School Board: Places 2 and 7 are on the ballot.

Place 2: Julie Gamez, 46, of Shiner, vice president of branch operations at South Star Bank, incumbent. Place 7: Bryan Herndon, 46, of Shiner, banking center president at Sage Capital Bank, was appointed in December; Teena Davis, 43, of Shiner, certified pharmacy technician; Michael Hopkins, 38, of Shiner, salesman.

Moulton:

City Council: Places 3,4, 5 are on the ballot.

Place 3: Kelley Moeller, 52, of Moulton, self-employed, incumbent; Place 4: Donald Wagner, 70, of Moulton, retired, incumbent; Randy Johnson, 59, of Moulton, investor; Place 5: Nathan Beyer, 26, of Moulton, salesman, incumbent.

School Board: Places 6 and 7 are on the ballot.

Place 6: Daniel Beyer, 46, of Moulton, Department of Family and Protective Services investigator, incumbent; Place 7: Tina Trejo, 39, of Moulton, bank clerk, incumbent.

Refugio County

Refugio:

City Council: Aldermen places 3, 4, 5 to be elected.

Place 5: Dale Skrobarcek, 54, of Refugio, mechanic, incumbent.

Refugio school board: Districts 2 and 4 are on the ballot.

District 2: Lorraine Garcia, 54, of Refugio, deputy clerk, incumbent; District 4: T. Wayne Price, 75, of Refugio, pastor of First Baptist Church of Refugio, incumbent.

Refugio County Memorial Hospital District: Places 1, 2, 3 and 4 to be elected.

Place 1: Art Loya, 87, of Refugio, retired, incumbent; Place 2: Harry Lawson, 72, of Refugio, retired, incumbent; Place 3: Bob Koonce, 76, of Refugio, retired, incumbent; Place 4: Sandra Ermis, 65, of Woodsboro, retired, incumbent.

Woodsboro:

City Council: Aldermen places 3, 4, 5 to be elected.

Place 5: Richard Sanchez, 71, retired, incumbent, John Schlabach, 72, construction constructor; Place 3: Johnny Cisneros, 74, retired, incumbent. All are of Woodsboro

Woodsboro school board: Places 3, 4 and 5 are on the ballot

Place 4: Henry Balderamas, 57, of Woodsboro, retired Texas game warden, incumbent; Place 5: Cody Drew Tuttle, 29, of Woodsboro, plant operations supervisor and local business owner.

Bayside:

City Council: Mayor and council members places 2 and 3 positions to be elected.

There will also be a special election for Places 4 and 5 council members for unexpired terms.

Mayor, Sharon Scott, 75, of Bayside, retired. Scott was appointed as mayor when the previous mayor resigned.

Austwell:

City Council: Mayor and Commissioner Place 1 will be on the ballot.

There have been no early filings. Mayor Mary Canales and Commissioner Steve Johnson, both incumbents, intend to file.

Austwell-Tivoli School board: Places 1 and 2 to be elected.
