Legal abortion is a form of genocide

Editor, the Advocate:

I am writing in reference to a letter that appeared in the Advocate's Viewpoints section Jan. 12, titled, "Has God given permission to kill the unborn?"

Let's consider additional data and issues regarding abortion. According to a report by the Guttmacher Institute, the abortion rate has declined since abortion was legalized in 1973. However, the report estimates over 900,000 abortions per year are still occurring and 59,000,000 have been killed since 1973.

During the past 44 years, legal abortion has had a massive effect, both socially and economically, in ways beyond the question of sanctity of life. According to the Marriage and Religion Research Institute, the following negative effects have taken place:

Sexual behavior has changed, particularly outside of marriage. Had abortions not been legalized, then about one-third of aborted children would be present today.

Abortion negatively affects our economic activity and tax revenue, with billions of dollars being lost. Some economists/ researchers believe the U.S. birth rate should be 2.1 births per couple to sustain population growth without immigration. However, our current rate is only 1.9. The U.S. is still growing, but only because of immigration.

Legalized abortion has opened Pandora's Box regarding morals, social mindsets and human behavior. We have advanced considerably in technology but regressed socially.

Making abortion legal and declaring it socially acceptable has belittled perception of the sanctity of life, especially in our younger generation. Considering our younger generation and other abortion supporters, one must wonder what effect their perception of the sanctity of life will have on the future elderly population. Will the elderly become subject to end-of-life procedures because of age limitations, physical conditions or restrictive health care? Remember the science fiction movie "Soylent Green"? Although the movie was fiction, it can serve as a warning that bad things happen when you open Pandora's Box.

In my opinion, legal abortion is wrong on all accounts and represents a form of genocide.
