EDNA - Edna had the ball under Palacios' basket with 2 seconds left in a tie game, and there was no doubt who the Cowboys wanted to get the ball.
"Coach says I'm the leader of the team," Kenny Haynes said. "He said in times like that, I should have the ball in my hands. I said, 'You got to get the ball to me.' They got the ball to me and I made things happen."
Haynes hit a turnaround 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Cowboys to a 51-48 District 28-3A win on Tuesday night at the Edna gym.
The Cowboys improved to 16-6 on the season and captured their first district title since 2010 with a 9-1 record.
"I let them play it," said Edna coach Chad Hartley. "Kenny said in that last timeout, 'I got y'all.' So it basically came out of Kenny and not from me."
Haynes finished with a game-high 27 points, including five 3-pointers.
The final play was called by Edna assistant Jeff Aiken, who got it from Duke.
"For him to hit a shot like that is amazing," said Palacios coach Trent Weixelman. "Especially with all that on the line, it's incredible."
The Sharks (23-8, 7-3) jumped out to a 19-6 lead in the first quarter, but Edna pulled within one by halftime.
"I thought it was going to be our nerves," Hartley said. "That's what I've been afraid of all week. It's been nerves to start the game. Palacios came out with something we've never seen, so then we've got to work on it."
The game featured seven lead changes and six ties.
The Sharks, who were led by Camron Polk's 15 points, took a 48-45 lead on a putback by Javier Molina with 56 seconds remaining.
Edna tied the game on a 3-pointer by Reese Orsak with 27 seconds left.
Palacios ran the clock down to 8.81 seconds before taking a timeout.
The Sharks got the ball in the lane, but turned it over.
Edna called timeout and got the ball to Haynes at the top of the key.
The junior turned and launched a 3-pointer that set off a wild celebration before the Cowboys took turns cutting down the net.
"They told not to put my head down," Haynes said. "I put my head down and they said you can't do that when you're a leader because your teammates are going to look at you and do the same thing. They turned me up. This is absolutely amazing."
