Bech Bruun - Guest Column
My name is Bech Bruun, and I am asking for your vote for United States Congress, District 27. I am a proud husband and father of three great kids. I was born and raised in Corpus Christi and currently reside in Rockport. I have lived in communities in District 27 most of my life.
I recently stepped away from my full-time position as the chairman of the Texas Water Development Board in order to run for Congress. I was first appointed to the board by Governor Rick Perry in 2013 and was later appointed chairman by Governor Greg Abbott in 2015. Simply put, the agency's mission is to ensure Texas will have enough water.
I believe that ensuring a secure future supply of water for tens of millions of Texans may be the single most important policy issue facing our state. It affects each and every resident of District 27. Being entrusted with the responsibility of presiding over this agency by the two most conservative governors in Texas history is the highest honor of my professional career to date.
For years, I have been encouraged to run for office in the district in which I grew up and which I have called home most of my life. Those calls became especially strong last year as friends and supporters began asking me to consider a run for Congress. My family and I were faced with a tough decision, and I knew it was time to seek guidance from a higher source as I always do.
One Sunday in late August, I sat at the end of our pier in Rockport and sent up a prayer. I had felt for some time that I was approaching a symbolic "fork in the road" moment in my life, and I simply asked God to show me a sign, to guide me in the right direction. Five days later, Hurricane Harvey made landfall. The pier was gone, much of the Coastal Bend had been destroyed, and my direction and new purpose became clear.
I'm in this race for a number of reasons. I know that rebuilding the Texas Coast in CD 27 will be a long-term effort. My experience as head of the state's lead water agency makes me uniquely qualified to navigate bureaucratic federal agencies. That will help district residents get the solutions they need to aid in the ongoing recovery. I will continue to work in the district each and every day to earn your vote so that we can not only rebuild stronger communities post-Harvey but also address a number of other pressing issues important to Texans in CD 27.
• I will work to ensure our veterans are getting the care they earned and deserve for their sacrifice for our freedom.
• I will work to secure our border and to assist local law enforcement with the tools they need to keep our families safe.
• I will press for full-scale immigration reform and full funding of our nation's military.
• I will protect our unborn children and the Second Amendment and ensure that in all things, we follow the U.S. Constitution.
I am also the candidate who best understands the issues facing this district, from our ports to our military installations to our agricultural and rural interests. I am proud to have received the endorsement of the longest-serving governor in Texas history, Rick Perry; the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association; the Texas Alliance for Life; and a number of local elected officials, including my hometown mayor, sheriff and county judge. It's my experience that makes me the most qualified in the race to represent Congressional District 27 so that we may strengthen our economy and increase the quality of life for our families and our children's future.
My wife and I still have faith that we can elect good people to Congress who will effectively represent the needs of their district. It's the people like you, whom I have worked for at the state level for years, who have inspired me to step up and be that trusted leader for my home district. If there is one thing that separates me from the other candidates in this race, it is that I have a proven track record of getting things done. And, I will never forget that I work for you. I support our President and agree with "America First," but I pledge that if elected, I will always put "CD 27 First."
I appreciate your support in the upcoming election so that we can continue to all come together and work on the issues that are important to our district and our country. God bless America, God bless Texas and God bless CD 27.
