GONZALES - Playing in her first playoff game, Giani Wimbish-Gay admitted she had a few jitters during pregame warmups.

"I was nervous," Giani Wimbish-Gay said. "I didn't know how the pace of the game was going to be. Before the game, my shot wasn't on, but after I made my first shot, I felt really good."

The Victoria East freshman connected on four 3-pointers and had 16 points to help lead the Lady Titans to a 65-33 Class 5A bi-district win over San Antonio Lanier on Tuesday night at the Gonzales gym.

East (17-19) has now won nine of their last 11 games and will face Austin High, a 36-23 winner over Boerne Champion, in the area round on Friday in Gonzales.

"After she hit that first one, you could see her confidence rise," said East coach Yulonda Wimbish-North. "She did a great job offensively."

The Lady Titans' quick start began when Leilani Wimbish-Gay opened the scoring with back-to-back 3-pointers.

East jumped out to a 17-10 lead after the first quarter and a 38-22 halftime lead.

Senior Imani Wimbish-Gay scored a game-high 28 points to lead the Lady Titans, who led by as many as 32 points.

"Our goal was to come out and play hard," Imani Wimbish-Gay said. "We wanted to play like it was our last game. We were doing well in our drive and kick."

Giani, Leilani and Imani Wimbish-Gay combined for 56 points in the Lady Titans' playoff victory.

"Leilani was able to stay in the game after getting in foul trouble," Wimbish-North said. "Overall, it was a great team effort. She (Imani) stepped up and took the point guard role and was abler to score. I think her leadership was good tonight."

The Lady Voks (12-22) were led by Kim Hernandez and Diandra Flores, who combined for 25 points.

"We're only going to be able to enjoy it for tonight," Wimbish-North said. "Tomorrow, we're going to start getting ready to form a game plan for Austin High."
