AUSTIN - Four San Antonio Cole players and one from Karnes City were issued suspensions by the University Interscholastic League State Executive Committee.

In addition, Karnes City coach Kyle Armstrong, a Victoria High graduate, and Cole coach Noe Cantu, who coached at Victoria West last year, were issued two-years probation and a public reprimand.

The committee met Tuesday and announced the penalties as the result of a brawl between the teams during their Feb. 6 District 26-3A game in Karnes City.

The committee also suspended junior varsity and varsity players from Wharton and Columbia and issued Wharton coach Julius Carter and Columbia coach Thomas Josey two-years probation and a public reprimand for an incident between the District 26-4A teams.

The altercation between Cole and Karnes City began with about 4 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

Officials at the game reported the benches emptied, fans came on the court from the stands, and the game was called.

Karnes City decided to forfeit its game Friday against Fox Tech and had a bye Tuesday, so its season is over.

Cole, which is ranked No. 3 in the state by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and has already clinched the district championship, used junior varsity players in its loss to San Antonio Brooks Academy on Friday.

The Cougars were expected to do the same in Tuesday's game against Natalia.

The Karnes City player's suspension will carry over to his next sport since the Badgers have completed the basketball season.

The District 26-3A Executive Committee met about the incident and Karnes City was ordered to investigate whether racial slurs from spectators helped instigate the brawl.

Karnes City athletic director Jim Wood said the school plans to issue a statement Wednesday and he declined to comment.

Players involved in the incident between Wharton and Columbia were given additional one-game suspensions.

As a result, Wharton's freshman game at Bay City on Tuesday was canceled and the teams played only junior varsity and varsity games.
