Icy weather caused emergency responders in Wharton and Jackson counties to respond to a multitude of vehicle wrecks Tuesday night.

"There are several crashes going on because of the icy conditions," said Sgt. Ruben San Miguel of the Department of Public Safety.

There were 12 crashes reported but none had serious injuries as of 9:15 p.m., San Miguel said. He said drivers need to slow down when they cross overpasses and bridges because they freeze first. San Miguel said the Texas Department of Transportation was placing sand and emergency lights on overpasses. The Wharton County Sheriff's Office reported on its Facebook page about 7 p.m. that deputies had responded to multiple crashes on U.S. 59.

"Please stay off the roadways if possible," Wharton County officials wrote. "Be extra careful in the morning if reporting to work."

Drivers were asked to report ice on roadways to law enforcement. Details about all the wrecks were not available.
