Icy roads cause multiple traffic accidents

Law enforcement officials in Wharton and Jackson counties were busy late Tuesday responding to several vehicular wrecks.

"It was just hectic," said Jackson County Sheriff Andy Louderback. "We had a lot of minor bumps and damages because of icy roads. Most of them were minor accidents."

Jackson County officials experienced 12 wrecks about 9:15 p.m. Tuesday.

As of Wednesday night, Louderback said he did not know how many more accidents troopers and deputies responded to in his county.

The Wharton County Sheriff's Office also reported on Tuesday night on its Facebook page that deputies responded to "multiple vehicle crashes" on US 59. Wharton County officials could not be reached after 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Louderback said the number of accidents should decrease starting Wednesday night when the temperatures start to rise.

The sheriff said drivers should drive safely when cold temperatures change the condition of the road.

"It's always good to be cautious on the road and practice defensive driving," Louderback said.

The number of wrecks that the Department of Public Safety responded to also was not available.
