CUERO - Ibree Coe is a freshman, but Cuero coach Amy Crain didn't hesitate to start her at the point.
Crain has learned to trust Coe's ability to make plays and the correct decisions.
"She's hard to guard," Crain said. "I wouldn't want to guard her. She's doing a really good job. She's really quick. You should see her fly around the track. She's just a tough matchup and does a lot of good things for us on the court."
Coe scored a team-high 17 points to lead the Lady Gobblers to a 51-32 District 30-4A win over Somerset on Tuesday night at the Cuero gym.
"At first I was really nervous," Coe said. "But I talked to coach before the season started and she told me it would be OK. I've overcome my nervousness and play as she teaches me to play."
Cuero (12-13, 2-0) jumped out to an 11-2 lead, and had a 30-12 advantage by halftime.
"I challenged them because I knew Somerset would be scrappy," Crain said. "They're young, but I knew they were going to put pressure on us. I wanted them to start strong and finish stronger."
Coe was proud of the way her teammates attacked the basket and handled the physicality of the Lady Bulldogs (9-14, 0-1).
"We played really aggressive," she said. "Before the game started, coach told us that it was going to be a rough team. We had to play rough and be ready to fight."
Alyssa Rushing added 13 points and Katie Crain scored 12 for Cuero, which led by as much as 24 points in the fourth quarter.
"We started strong, we had a few lapses throughout the game defensively, but I thought all in all we did a good job," Crain said. "We executed our offense the way we needed to. Yes, we made some mistakes, but overall we did a good job of getting done what we needed to on offense and defense."
