Jonathan Zelaya doesn't see himself slowing down.

Neither does the Victoria East powerlifting team.

"We don't plan on taking any days off," the senior captain said. "I know our team wants to get better each week."

Zelaya's hard work paid off after he lifted a personal best in the squat (585) and deadlift (530) for a total of 1,435 pounds to help East capture first place at the Edna Invitational on Saturday at the Edna gym.

Zelaya was also named best overall lightweight lifter at the meet.

"I think what helps us the most is our fellowship together," Zelaya said. "We created a bond over the last few weeks, and it's pretty unbreakable. It helps us train, and it helps us push ourselves harder."

The Titans bounced back after placing second at last week's meet in Gregory-Portalnd.

Victoria East powerlifting coach Spencer Gantt has taken notice of his team's improvement throughout the first three meets.

"They're excited about what they're doing each week," Gantt said. "Our expectations are to win everywhere we go. We're not shy about that, and we are going to go out and compete."

The Titans also received a strong performance from Christian Oviedo, who was named the best overall heavyweight lifter at the meet.

Oviedo placed first in the 220-pound class. Celestino Alvarez (242), Malakye Adams (275) and Jeremiah Zelaya all placed first in their weight classes.

Jorge Vazquez (275) placed second for the Titans, while Arron Vasquez (242) grabbed third. Christian Gomez (242) took home fourth for East.

Mackenzi Sneath led the Lady Titans by placing first in the 132-pound weight class. Lauren Flores placed fifth in the 132-pound weight class.

"We want to finish really strong," Jonathan Zelaya said. "We hope to have six to seven guys qualify for regionals. As for the girls, I'm going to push them and help them qualify for regionals."

East will travel for the Tidehaven Meet on Feb. 10 and then the Bay City Meet on Feb. 17.

"Our goal is go out and work hard," Gantt said. "I want to see our team push themselves to the limit. I want to see them get better and help each other."
