Food service inspection reports

The Victoria County Public Health Department Environmental Health Division inspects places where food is served in Victoria, DeWitt, Jackson and Calhoun counties.

In the inspection reports, each violation in the Priority items 1-20 is 3 demerits; Priority Foundation items 21-33 are 2 demerits; and Core items are 1 demerit. Zero is a perfect score, while 100 demerits is the worst possible score.

Each Wednesday, the Advocate publishes inspection results from the previous week. All demerits are reported, but only those Priority and Core items are detailed.

FOOD SERVICE INSPECTIONS FOR WEEK ENDING JUNE 12

Magic Asian Cuisine, 101 N. Commerce St., Port Lavaca. Demerits: 45. Black fridge, glass cooler not holding 41 degrees. Need to keep documentation on food kept out at room temperature. Cannot use thank-you bags to store food. Need an employee health and personal hygiene book. Need to wash hands upon entering kitchen to prepare food. Cannot use over-the-counter pest control. Need one certified food manager. Need a bodily fluids cleanup kit. All other employees need a food handler certificate. Live roach in kitchen. No pest control receipt for May. Coolers not holding 41 degrees or below. Need to date-label all foods use-by date. Need sanitizer test strips. Need current food permit. Walls need to be easily cleanable. Mop sink does not have hot and cold water. Need to discard rice with dead insect in it. Need to store food containers 6 inches off the floor. Need to cover food in cooler. Need to discard slicer. Ice scoop needs handle. Need to label seasoning not in original container. Need to thoroughly clean grease on shelves, walls and equipment. Vent in restroom not working. Need to seal holes in the walls. Restroom needs covered trash can. Need a first-aid kit.

Taqueria El Rodeo No. 2, 3402 Sam Houston Drive, Victoria. Demerits: 34. Two-door glass cooler not holding 41 degrees or less. Need to document time food is kept out at room temperature. Cannot store towels directly on tortillas. Need to store flour 6 inches off the floor. Need to cover maseca bag. Need to cover food in walk-in cooler and freezer. Need employee health and personal hygiene handbook. Cannot have over-the-counter spray in establishment. Need bodily fluid cleanup kit. Need all food handlers certificates on file. Need to date-label food in the refrigerator with a use-by date. Need a thermometer in the tabletop. Cannot use cardboard on surfaces. Need to replace cracked two-compartment sink. Employee drinks need lids and straws. Need to store wet towels in sanitizer buckets. Cannot use towels to store cups on top of. Need to defrost meat under cold running water. Scoops need handles. Las Palmas Mexican Cafe, 6007 N. Main St., Suite D and E, Victoria. Demerits: 30. Two-door cooler by backdoor above 41 degrees. Need to document time on rice kept out at room temperature. Need to discard any potentially hazardous food in two-door cooler not holding 41 degrees or less. Need barrier between tortillas and towels. Need to store raw chicken below beef. Do not store tortillas or cakes in thank-you bags. 0ppm sanitizer bucket. Do not store medication in prep area. Need current food handlers certificates. Roaches present. Breakfast menu needs asterisks by items that can be sold raw or undercooked. Do not block hand washing sink. Cannot use wooden cups for drinks at bar. Food handlers need hairnet or ball cap. Need to store hand towels in sanitizer bucket.

The Texan, 526 W. Main St., Yorktown. Demerits: 28. Need to keep time documented of food not holding proper temperature. Need to store raw shrimp and fish under fruit and boiled eggs. Need to store sanitizer bucket off food prep counter. Need to label sanitizer bucket. Do not dispose of sanitizer in hand sink Need complete ingredient labeling on packaged food. Need to date-label all food in walk-in. Need a thermometer in kitchen table top. Need correct test strips. Need current food permit. Hot water needs to be 100 degrees in restroom hand sink. Need paper towels at hand sink, corrected on site. Need to keep hand sink open, corrected on site. Hand sink is for hand-washing only. Need to replace cracked lids. Need to keep cellphones off food prep areas; corrected on site. Need to cover food in walk-in. Need to store food 6 inches off the ground. Dumpster needs to be on nonabsorbent surface. El Pico De Gallo, 609 E. Rio Grande St., Victoria. Demerits: 26. Refried beans in Magali at 47 degrees. Need to document time food kept out at room temperature. Need to discard beans that were not cooled properly. Need to keep sanitizer bucket 6 inches off floor. Need certified food manager. Menu needs disclosure reminder. Do not store towels in hand-washing sink. Shelves should be easily cleanable. No phones in prep area. Employees drinks must have lids and straws. Need to store wet towels in sanitizer buckets. Need to store utensils with handle up. Need to label all containers. Trash can in women’s restroom needs lid. Need to post last inspection visible to the public.

Chuck Machacek, Mobile Unit, Port Lavaca. Demerits: 24. Need to keep time documented on time food at room temperature. Cannot sell canned jalapenos. Need an employee health and personal hygiene book. Need to use gloves or hand sanitizer when handling cooked foods. Need to have water well tested. Need a water sample from mobile unit. Need a bodily fluids cleanup kit. Need sanitizer test strips. Need to keep hand sink open. Employee drinks need lids and straws. Need to use proper defrost methods. Must have a screen door if the door is kept open.

Maya Mexican Restaurant, 1909 N. Esplanade St., Cuero. Demerits: 23. Need to wash hands before putting gloves on. Need to label sanitizer bottle and sanitizer bucket. Need to repair leak under counter at the dishwasher. Need to date-label prepared food. Need sanitizer test strips. Do not store rim of glasses directly on ice. Employees need hair restraints. Need to keep food covered in walk-in. Need to clean ice machine. Need to store ice scoop on clean surface. Need shields on lights in kitchen closest to walk-in. Need to seal raw wood in bar. Women’s restroom needs covered trash can.

Yamato Hibachi and Sushi, 9104 N. Navarro St. No. 400, Victoria. Demerits: 23. Need to document time on cut chives and mushrooms. Need to store raw chicken below other food in walk-in. Cannot store over-the-counter bug spray in establishment. Cannot have carpet in kitchen. Need to seal wood under ice machines. Need to store wet towels in sanitizer bucket. Need light shields over food prep and dishwashing areas. Grease container and dumpster must be on a nonabsorbent surface. Need to clean ceiling above food prep areas. Need a hand-washing sign at the bar hand sink.

J and T One Stop, 514 Margie Tewmey Road, Magnolia Beach. Demerits: 13. Need to wash hands before glove use. Do not store fire ant poison in food establishment. Need to use licensed pet control. Need a bodily fluid cleanup kit. Need test strips. Ice scoop must be kept on an easily cleanable surface or store handle up in the machine. Food handlers must wear hair restraint.

Bayside Seafood Restaurant, 2055 SH 35 N, Port Lavaca. Demerits: 8. Need food handlers certificates. Need to date label items in walk-in. Employee drinks must have lids and a straws. Need to store gumbo cooling 4 to 6 inches off the ground. Need to defrost fish in walk-in cooler or under cold running water. Need more lighting in walk-in cooler.

Family Dollar Store No. 5860, 3101 Sam Houston Drive, Victoria. Demerits: 8. Outdated can goods. Need employee health and personal hygiene policy. Need thermometer in three-door cooler for milk and deli meat.

La Tejanita, 1309 Sam Houston Drive, Victoria. Demerits: 8. Need to label sanitizer bucket. Need to replace chipped plates. Employee drinks must have straws and lids. Wet towels must be stored in sanitizer bucket. Need hand-washing sign at bar hand sink.

Wagon Train Restaurant, 145 N. SH 35, Port Lavaca. Demerits: 7. Cannot store sanitizer bucket on prep area. Need all food handlers certificates. Do not use newspapers to cover surfaces in the kitchen.

Kat’s Safari Snowcones, Mobile Unit, Yorktown. Demerits: 6. Need to have water tested yearly. Waste water hose needs to be closed. Cannot run wastewater on the ground. Need to keep records of when wastewater is disposed. Need certified food manager. Need to post certificate. Need employee health and personal hygiene handbook. Need first-aid kit. Need bodily fluid cleanup kit. Need sanitized test strips.

M.H. Leske Oil Company, 413 S. Esplanade St., Cuero. Demerits: 5. Out-of-date deli sandwiches. Vent fans in restroom needs to work. Dumpster needs to be on nonabsorbent surface. Need to look into installing a three-compartment sink for washing dishes by next inspection.

Memorial Medical Center, 815 Virginia St., Port Lavaca. Demerits: 4. Need ingredient labels on packed items that are self-serve. Need to store wet towels in sanitizer bucket. Need hand-washing sign in restroom.

Cathy’s Restaurant, 2581 W. Adams Ave., Port O’Connor. Demerits: 4. Need a mop sink. Employee drinks need lids and straws. Need store wet towels in sanitizer bucket.

Family Dollar No. 32077, 1606 N. Navarro St., Victoria. Demerits: 3.

Buc-ees, 2318 W. Main St., Port Lavaca; Subway, 400 Tiney Browning Boulevard, Port Lavaca; Taqueria Mazatlan, 150 N. Highway 35 B, Port Lavaca; Sonic Drive-In No. 4798, 3603 John Stockbauer Drive, Victoria. Demerits: 0.

REINSPECTIONS
