Crossroads Country Opry sets performers

Bob Appel, Nikki Vincent and Nap Gabler will join the Crossroads Country Opry Band for an evening of live music, food and fun 5:30-9:30 p.m. Wednesday at the VFW Hall, 2001 Lova Drive.

A meal is served at 5:30 p.m. The menu includes hamburgers, chips and cake. The show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets for the meal are $7, and the show is $7. For more information, contact John Sullivan at 361-579-8460.

GOP women’s group to present scholarships

Senator Lois Kolkhorst will speak to the Republican Women of the Yoakum Area and present the monetary awards at the annual luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Yoakum Community Center.

Each September, a scholarship essay contest is held in conjunction with the Constitution Day celebration. This year, more than 85 students participated. Essays were judged by a RWOYA committee. Awards of $1000, $500, $300 and $200 will be given to the winners. This year, a teacher with the highest number of students in the last round of elimination will receive an award of $300. The grand prize winner will read their essay to the audience. All senior students, their parents and teachers are invited for the ceremony, and the event is open to the public. Children’s Discovery Museum plans Fall Frolic

The Children’s Discovery Museum, 1205 Sam Houston Drive, will host a Fall Frolic from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Come dressed in your costume for a contest to be judged by Clifford the Big Red Dog.

Victoria library to host Murder Mystery Night

Join the Victoria Public Library for a Masquerade Murder Mystery Night from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 19. Help solve the case of the masquerade murder in the library.

It’s up to you to question the suspects, identify holes in their stories and determine who had the motive, means and opportunity to kill.

This is a free program. You must be 21 years of age or older to participate.

Youth group sponsors SOAR 5K walk/run

The second annual SOAR 5K walk/run, sponsored by the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church Youth Department, will be 8:15 a.m.-noon Oct. 19 at the Riverside Park Special Events Area, 311 Memorial Drive. Everyone of all ages is invited to participate. The cost is $30 for adults and $25 for those 18 and younger. Each person registered will receive a T-shirt. Calvary Baptist Church and will be used to help fund a trip to Washington D.C.

Victoria in Motion hosts ‘Young Frankenstein’

Victoria in Motion is celebrating its 10th Anniversary with a special screening of Mel Brooks’ “Young Frankenstein” from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Leo Welder Center.

Admission is $10, and tickets can be purchased online or at the Welder Box Office.

100% of proceeds will be donated to Citizens Medical Foundation to help fund mammograms for people who can’t afford them.
