Playwright Terrence McNally will receive an honorary award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre at Sunday’s 2019 Tony Awards.
The playwright grew up with his brother, Victoria resident Peter McNally, during the 1950s in Corpus Christi, whose name he borrowed for a 1997 play. He has received four Tony awards over the course of his career, including one in the category of Best Play for “Love! Valour! Compassion!”
“I’m very excited for him, it’s a huge honor,” said Peter McNally, program director of Victoria Business and Education Coalition. “He’s already received four Tony’s and this is his fifth, honorary one. It’s kind of like being in the hall of fame.”
McNally’s Tony-award-winning musical “The Full Monty” was performed at Victoria’s Leo J. Welder Center in 2015.
His newest play, “Immortal Longings,” will have its world premiere June 20 at Austin’s Zach Theatre.
