Back-to-school season is around the corner.

Faith Family Church wants to make sure every child in the Crossroads has the proper tools on the first day of class.

To that end, Mark Longoria, Faith Family's Outreach director, is organizing Pack the Bus, an project which aims to deliver school supplies to 3,000 area students.

From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 9-10, H-E-B and H-E-B Plus! in Victoria will set up a bus where people can deposit new school supply donations.

Monetary donations will also be accepted.

"The purpose of the Pack the Bus Project is to equip children with the basic educational supplies necessary to succeed," Longoria said, mentioning that last year, more than 2,000 students received help from this program.

Longoria said the Golden Crescent Workforce Commission reported that children living at or below the poverty level in the Crossroads were five times more likely to drop out of high school and continue adulthood in poverty.

"By providing the right equipment, the project will enable the children to place a higher priority on education," he said.

Registration to receive the supplies begins Thursday. Longoria said the program will assist children in any of Victoria's seven surrounding counties. Parents can register their children at Faith Family Church or the Victoria school district administrative offices.

Supplies will be distributed from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 17 at Faith Family Church's Connection Center.
