Q: How can I add my business to the list of Daily Deals offered to University of Houston-Victoria students, faculty and staff?

A: As the university’s faculty and staff begin preparing for the fall semester, UHV Student Life will spend the summer soliciting participants in the Daily Deals program.

Daily Deals is a student discount program. Participating local businesses provide different discounts to attract students to their places of business. Some offer monetary discounts, while others have buy one, get one free items. Students present their UHV ID cards to receive the discounts. Some deals also apply to faculty and staff with UHV employee ID cards. During the 2018-2019 fiscal year, 32 businesses offered Daily Deals in Victoria.

The deals are intended to benefit both local businesses and the university’s students. Businesses will receive increased visibility by being promoted as Daily Deals, and students, many of whom come from outside Victoria, will be more likely to frequent the locations. Students also will benefit because many live on tight budgets, so deals help them connect with community businesses without having to worry about spending. These deals also encourage students to get out and try new restaurants or activities they have not experienced before. They may connect a student with his new favorite restaurant or activity.

Many of the deals are food-related, such as a discounted price on a specific meal or a free item with the purchase of a meal. Deals can come from locally owned restaurants, food trucks, cafes or even fast-food franchises. The 2018-2019 list included deals for barbecue restaurants, coffee shops, pizza, delis, fast food and shaved ice.

Another common Daily Deals option is entertainment. Many of these deals include special ticket prices; a percentage off admission; buy one, get one deals; or special group rates. Deals from 2018-2019 included discounts on movie tickets and screenings, museum memberships, bowling, laser tag, golf, skating, kayaking, concert tickets and zoo admission.

If a business doesn’t fall under the food or entertainment categories, that doesn’t mean it can’t offer a Daily Deal. Any goods or services that students are likely to purchase can be included. Some deals from the 2018-2019 list included trophies, haircuts, eyewear, cellphone accessories and even a discount on Lasik surgery. Any business that offers a product or service that could be used by a UHV student is welcome to join the list.
