Q: My student is planning to attend UHV in the fall, and I heard a new student orientation is coming up. Will there be another one soon, and what will be involved?
A: The University of Houston-Victoria will host two New Student Orientations this summer. The first two-day event will be June 13-14, and the next event will be July 12-13.
Orientation is reserved for students who already have been accepted into the university. Students’ admissions to-do list also must be completed and accepted before they can sign up to attend orientation.
In addition, you need to contact either your recruiter or the UHV Student Success Center to begin registration for the fall semester.
New Student Orientation is intended to help incoming freshmen get to know the university and available student services. Check-in for the first day of each event will be at 9 a.m. inside Jaguar Hall, 2705 Houston Highway. After check-in, students and their parents will hear a welcome from UHV President Bob Glenn, have the opportunity to attend several sessions about resources available at UHV and how to prepare for college and be able to enjoy dinner inside Jaguar Hall.
Students can attend information sessions that focus on topics including Skills and Strategies for Success, Paying for Your Education, Resources for Jaguars and Navigate for Jaguars. Each topic will explore important information students need to get started at UHV or help them settle into the college environment.
Parents also will have the opportunity to attend sessions. The topics of parent sessions include Campus Safety, Getting to Know Victoria, College Money Management and Helping Your Student Succeed. These topics are intended to educate parents about how UHV will be helping their students. The sessions also will encourage parents to help their students by sharing this information about topics such as money management and the importance of making healthy choices. Most importantly, the university wants parents to feel secure and know their students will be taken care of at UHV.
In addition to information sessions, students and their parents will be able to explore the UHV campus and visit with various departments that can help students complete their myUHV To-Do checklists. Tables from several UHV departments will be set up on campus, including Admissions, Financial Aid, Residence Life, Student Life, Student Success Center, Career Services and Counseling Center. Students can use this opportunity to come ask questions about the university and get face-to-face answers.
The sessions and information fair will be finished by 3 p.m. Then, 3-5 p.m., attendees will have the opportunity to take tours of UHV’s residence halls, starting in Jaguar Hall. Students also can use this time to register for classes.
Orientation also is an opportunity for incoming students to bring any forms they may need to submit or apply for housing in Jaguar Village. If you are planning to attend UHV in the fall, please make time to attend one of the two sessions.
