Those who plan to attend athletic events at the Victoria school district will need to follow a new bag policy, according to a VISD news release.

The Victoria school district announced Monday that beginning with the 2019-2020 school year and athletic season, only clear bags and one non-clear bag smaller than 5½ inches by 8½ inches in size will be allowed in district facilities. The policy is not a response to any specific event or concern but an effort by the school district to improve safety standards for students, parents and the community, according to the news release.

Other school districts that have adopted similar clear-bag procedures include Austin, Judson, Hays, Lake Travis, Comal and Corpus Christi school districts.

The policy applies to the VISD Aquatics Center, the District Event Center, Memorial Stadium, Patti Welder Stadium and both Victoria East and West high school gymnasiums. The new policy does not apply to the VISD Fine Arts Center at this time. The policy also applies to any organization that uses the facilities.

However, the policy does not apply to elementary and middle schools.

Spectators will be prohibited from entering athletic venues with camera cases, briefcases, backpacks, cinch bags, large purses and similar items. The only bags that will be permitted are clear plastic bags that do not exceed 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches.

Clear bags may have only one logo that does not obstruct contents. Printed or patterned clear bags will not be permissible.

Exceptions to the clear bag procedure and size requirements apply only to diaper bags, medically necessary items and equipment for media personnel with valid credentials. Diaper bags will not be allowed for guests without a child present. Cameras and binoculars may be carried by hand, but the cases for the items are not allowed.

All bags are subject to search. Blankets and stadium seats or chair backs that do not have pockets or zippers are permitted but will also be subject to search. Those who do bring a prohibited bag to an event will be required to return the bag to their vehicle before entering the event venue, according to the news release.
