The word hedge in the Bible is like a protective fence.
God gives his obedient people a divine protective hedge.
When his people begin to produce evil fruit by sinful living, God removes his hedge of protection.
We see in Isaiah 5 the illustration of God's people likened to a vineyard. God had blessed and favored this people, but sin took its toll, and God's justice soon had to intervene.
Let us look at what was going on with these people that God had to bring them to judgement. We see there was selfish greed. The wealthy land owners were acquiring more estates by foreclosing mortgages or by forcing sales of land.
They were guilty of frivolous pleasure seeking and vicious dissipation set their hearts on drunkenness and parties and produced evil fruit and a life of destruction. They were guilty of cynical materialism, challenging God's power to intervene in human history and exercise his sovereignty.
They were guilty of reversing the standards of morality. They acclaimed depravity of character as manly strength and sensuous impurity as true virtue and strength.
They were guilty of intellectual praise and self sufficiency. They fancied themselves wiser than God or the experience of past generations. They were guilty of alcoholic indulgence.
They measured strength by dissipation and excess. They were guilty of corruption. They sold their integrity for silver in their discharge of public office and deprived the innocent of their legal rights in cases of law.
Galatians 6:7 tells us "Be not deceived God is not mocked, for whatever a man soweth, that shall he also reap."
God's law of the harvest comes to a reality. All of the evil seed that God's people planted would now come into a harvest or destruction on the nation. God would remove his hedge from the fruitfulness of the land, and other nations would devastate the land and its inhabitants.
How can a nation, state, local community or family keep God's hedge of protection? Do not reject God's word; obey God.
How can you have God's hedge of protection if you reject Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour?
Isaiah 5:5 "And now, I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away its hedge, and it shall be eaten up; and break down its wall, and it shall be trodden down."
God can restore if people turn from their wicked ways and stop rejecting his word.
