Residents in the Castle Hills neighborhood emerged from their homes into the stifling June heat after a car crashed, flipped and caught fire on Salem Road. Numerous residents reported hearing a loud bang.

About 9:50 a.m., dispatchers sent police and firefighters to a flipped Kia Optima in the 700 block of Salem Road. Just before officers arrived, Garcia fled the scene.

When Garcia returned to the scene of the crash, he refused medical treatment and was arrested on warrants unrelated to the crash.

Brogger added that investigators determined Garcia was involved in a disturbance just before the crash. The crash and events that led up to it remain under investigation.

Garcia was arrested by Victoria police officers on a San Patricio County charge for possession of marijuana and booked into the county jail at 11:10 a.m., a jail official said.

After the crash, firefighters sprayed water on the burning wreckage as residents in the nearby Castle Hills neighborhood emerged from their homes to see what had happened.

Pedro Garcia, 21, who was building a backyard workshop at the time with a contracting crew, said he heard a loud bang over the noise of hammering and other construction sounds.

“I got curious,” he said, adding, “I saw a car flipped over and a fire.”
