The U.S. Coast Guard responded to a burning vacated vessel Friday in Copano Bay near Rockport.

An Air Station Corpus Christi MH-65 Dolphin helicopter air crew observed the fishing vessel sinking with no persons on board when they arrived at the scene, according to a news release.

Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi watchstanders received a radio mayday call at 6:51 a.m. Friday from a captain who saw the vessel on fire, the release said.

The watchstanders issued a Safety Marine Information Broadcast, notifying local mariners of the sunken vessel, and the Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi incident management division crews responded to assess the environmental impact and vessel salvage.
