An Edna man died Friday evening while kayaking, Jackson County Sheriff Andy Louderback said Monday.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office received a call after 7 p.m. Friday about an incident at a private pond on County Road 118, Louderback said.

Adrian DeLeon, 22, was kayaking with a 3-year-old boy when the kayak overturned, he said. DeLeon was able to save the toddler and hand him over to another person at the pond but was unable to save himself.

DeLeon was pronounced dead at the scene, Louderback said. The 3-year-old was not injured. Louderback said he did not know whether the child was related to DeLeon.

Those who plan to be on the water, whether kayaking, swimming or boating, need to make sure to take safety measures, Louderback said.

“Please prepare yourself with life jackets and life preservers for all who are out on the water,” he said.
