EDNA — Less than a year after Walmart closed in this small town, a new pharmacy celebrated its grand opening Friday at 604 N. Wells St.

Hiwot Dinkale, the owner of Edna Pharmacy, said the town needed a pharmacy that stayed open past 6 p.m., which is the closing time of the other pharmacies in town.

Edna Pharmacy will close at 9 p.m. weekdays, which pharmacy technician Lori Hernandez said would allow customers to pick up prescriptions after getting off work or buy medication for a sick child without having to drive to Victoria. Dinkale said her website also will allow customers to order specialty medication or medical supplies, such as wheelchairs.

Otherwise, Edna residents would have to drive to Victoria to purchase the items.

The Walmart in Edna closed in July, prompting a flurry of small-business activity.
