Everyday Hero

Janie Zeplin

Janie Zeplin

• Occupation: Retired

• Hometown: Victoria

• Why honored: Janie Zeplin is a leader who leads by example. She frequently uses her beautiful voice to lead the singing at First Presbyterian Church on Navarro Street. She starts services by leading the congregation in singing several familiar hymns that lead the group to feel welcome and attentive. Janie Zeplin, ordained minister, leads the entire worship service on occasions when the Rev. Kathryn Morton is away. Janie Zeplin radiates inner joy, goodwill and enthusiasm. And, by the way, she has cancer. Almost 22 years ago, Sept. 19, 1994, the dreaded diagnosis of breast cancer was given to Janie. She determined that the disease would not get the best of her. She decided to live each day to the best of her ability, realizing that some days would be better than others. Janie made up her mind to be as positive as possible while undergoing the treatments for cancer and their aftermath. Her courage has held through all of these years. Janie Zeplin, Everyday Hero, smiles and sings as she goes about living and spreading her special courage.
