A 9-year-old girl was killed early Sunday morning after a driver suspected of being drunk crashed into the SUV she was traveling in.
Rodolfo Alvarez, 41, of Victoria, was arrested on suspicion of murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, said Victoria Police Sgt. Herschel Buck.
Alvarez is being held without bail at the Victoria County Jail.
It was not clear Sunday night where the girl, identified in the arrest records as Sophia Calhoun, was from. She was a back seat passenger in the sport utility vehicle driven by Yvonne Calhoun, 38.
Alvarez initially was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. He told officers he'd consumed three beers, and he was unaware of being involved in a wreck, according to a sworn statement by police.
The arresting officer Cody Maresh noted that Alvarez had slurred speech and reeked of alcohol.
Maresh said in the statement when he arrived at the scene of the crash on the 4100 block of Houston Highway around 2:10 a.m., the blue sport utility vehicle driven by Calhoun was in a ditch near Two Step nightclub.
Alvarez's vehicle, a 2011 Ford F250 was stopped in the roadway.
Maresh administered a series of field sobriety tests, to which Alvarez consented, according to a criminal complaint.
Calhoun was taken to Citizens Medical Center with a collapsed lung and broken shoulder. A hospital spokeswoman said Calhoun was in stable condition Sunday night.
Sophia's relationship to Calhoun was not clear Sunday.
