Inez boy shot with pellet gun dies

The 12-year-old boy who was shot with a pellet gun last week in La Salle has died, according to a death notification from Rosewood Funeral Chapels.

Hunter Zane Smith, of Inez, was shot by another 12-year-old boy at the private residence of a Jackson County deputy. About 9:15 p.m. June 3, paramedics were called to the deputy’s home on County Road 325, said James Sudik, EMS director for Jackson County Hospital District.

After arriving, paramedics requested a helicopter to transport the severely injured boy to a trauma unit at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.

Hunter died Friday, according to the notification submitted to the Advocate by the funeral home.

Jackson County Sheriff Andy Louderback said he asked the Texas Rangers to investigate the shooting to promote transparency because it involved a member of his office.

Multiple calls to the Texas Department of Public Safety regarding the investigation and incident were not returned Tuesday.
