Southside community group to host block party

Bethany Castro speaks during a meeting of the Southside Community Coalition. The group will host a block party for the neighborhood Friday.

The Southside Community Coalition will host a block party in the Victoria neighborhood Friday.

This will be the group’s first major event. The coalition, which started in January, has been meeting monthly to provide a space for residents of the community to talk about what resources or changes they would like to see brought to the neighborhood.

Residents have said they want more community spaces, like a grocery store or community center for kids to use, that are accessible and within walking distance for people in the neighborhood who don’t have access to reliable transportation.

The block party will include booths from various groups and service agencies to provide information as well as food, games and other activities.
