A 72-year-old Cuero man died Monday morning in a single-vehicle crash after his pickup rolled on U.S. 59 near Sparkman Road in Victoria.

Kenneth Birchfield was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, said Senior Police Officer David Brogger, department spokesman. His sole passenger, a 14-year-old boy who was a family friend, was uninjured, Brogger said.

Both of the truck’s occupants were wearing seat belts, Brogger said.

About 10:50 a.m., Birchfield’s southbound silver Chevrolet 3500 slipped into a ditch along the highway’s right-hand shoulder and rolled, Brogger said.

It was unclear why Birchfield’s truck left the roadway, Brogger said.

Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Robert Whitaker is presiding over the death. He has requested an autopsy through Central Texas Autopsy in Lockhart.

Family members could not be reached Monday.
